San Antonio, Texas- From the first moment that the bells of the cathedral start to ring, this sweeping score and classic tale will captivate you. Relive Victor Hugo’s touching story of love and acceptance recreated by an Academy Award-winning team.
“The (Texas Premiere) Hunchback of Notre Dame is quite an undertaking and I am honored to have been the one to guide this show. While I am the Director of the show, I also serve as the Artistic Director of the theater. That affords me the privilege to witness the daily accomplishments of the incredible artists that worked on this production. Nick Ponting’s set deserves a standing ovation all on its own. From his North Rose Window to the stones and beams, he captures the cathedral while giving us an extremely functional set. Jeremy Whittington’s statue/gargoyle carvings, props, and drapery work add the extra final touches to this incredible view.
Noel Jordan’s costume design implemented by Cordelia Rios, Sarah Brookes, and Emily DeLaGarza gives us a stunning picture.
Darrin Newhardt’s music direction and orchestra is fantastic. When you combine that with the sound genius of Jesse Worley, this production becomes audio candy.
While this is not a dance intensive show, the movement in various scenes can be tricky and must be authentic. Courtnie Mercer’s work is well crafted and executed.
Put all of this together under the greatest lighting designer I have ever known and your jaw drops. At least mine does. Dan Heggem is a master and he reads my mind like no one else can.
When you watch this show, it seems easy, however, it is massively difficult. This cast is disciplined and focused. They made my job less challenging. Their commitment to give you a consistent high-quality production is evident. I will forever be grateful to the cast, crew, and Playhouse staff for making this story worth telling.”
