Better Business Bureau: Don’t Say ‘Yes’ To Phone Scammers

The Better Business Bureau has issued a warning about an old phone scam that recently resurfaced – and has resulted in the loss of tens of thousands of dollars. Perpetrators of the “Say Yes” phone scam call their victims and ask them a seemingly innocent question, like, “Can you hear me?” or “Do you have a moment to talk?” What the recipient of the call doesn’t know is the scammer is recording the response – and a “yes” reply can be applied to other questions that will authorize credit card charges or sign them up for a program that will incur monthly charges, according to the BBB. Officials are advising people to avoid saying “yes” when talking to an unknown peddler. Instead, the BBB recommends answering a question with a question, like, “What is the purpose of this call?” The agency also recommends checking bank and credit card accounts after receiving a potential scam call.
