Dogs are more than just pets.

They're best friends, family members, and even coworkers.

So in honor of National Dog Day (August 26), we wanted to know what are the top dogs in Texas.

In 2005, the Blue Lacy (aka the Lacy Dog) became the official state dog of Texas. The Blue Lacy hasn't been recognized as a unique breed by the American Kennel Club, but it's a truly Texas dog.

Blue Lacys were created in the 1900s by crossing an English shepherd with a greyhound and a wolf to form a working dog for ranchers and hunters, according to the National Lacy Dog Foundation. They're known for being intelligent, alert, and incredibly active.

While this unique breed is recognized by the state, it's not the most popular dog in Texas.

According to Reader's Digest, the most popular dog breed in the state is the Labrador. Other top breeds in Texas are German shepherds and bulldogs.

Texans who own labs are in good company because labs have been the most popular breed in the country since 1991, according to the AKC.
