The U.S. Senate today confirmed Mayor Julian Castro to be the next Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.  The vote was 71 to 26.

"I see HUD as the Department of Opportunity," Castro said.  "I have been guided by one goal of helping to create the opportunities that have been created for me.  I want to help insure that other folks have those same opportunities as well."

Castro says he will not resign as mayor immediately.

"My intention is to resign as mayor as soon as the new mayor has been selected," he said.

Congressman Joaquin Castro, the Secretary's brother, was among the first to praise the confirmation.

"Today's bipartisan confirmation is a testament to the incredible work Julian has done as mayor of our hometown of San Antonio," Joaquin said.  "I am proud of Julian and excited for our country."

Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) voted for the confirmation, Sen. Ted Cruz voted no.

Castro will now resign as Mayor and his successor will be named from among the ten Council members.
