The San Antonio Spurs put up a good fight to the end but lost to the New York Knicks Saturday night 94-90 in game 5 of the NBA playoffs, delivering a Championship win to New York for the first time in more than 50 years.
It was a nail-biter in the final half hour as the Spurs and the Knicks traded leads working into high 80s scores, then the 90s as they battled it out at Frost Bank Center, and with just 8 seconds left in the 4th quarter the Knicks had it at 92-90 with little hope for the Spurs.
By the time those 8 seconds ticked off, a lot of San Antonio fans were also ticked off -- as the Knicks grabbed the 2026 NBA championship, the franchise’s first NBA title since 1973.
Victor Wembanyama managed just nine points on 3-of-10 shooting, which also included 1-for-3 from 3-point range.
He picked up his second foul and spent the last minutes of the first half on the bench -- still the Spurs managed to lead 42-37 at the half.
There was excitement from Knicks fans, of course, including movie star Ben Stiller in the audience.
Another fan joked that if the Knicks win game 5 all of New York City's problems will be solved.
"It's gonna mean the rats will disappear, trees will start growing, potholes will be filled," pop star Cardi B said last week.
