FIESTA SAN ANTONIO® 2020 POSTPONED TO NOVEMBER

FIESTA

Citing its No. 1 priority is the health and safety of Fiesta guests and community and noting that the COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus pandemic has significantly reduced the prospects for safely hosting large public gatherings, the Fiesta San Antonio Commission today announced that Fiesta 2020 will be postponed to November 5-15, 2020.

“Over the past month, we have evaluated the concerns of health professionals, the impact on our hospitality industry, and the desire to continue this San Antonio tradition. Daily we see reports of cancellations of some of our favorite events, such as our beloved Spurs and the Valero Texas Open,” said Jeanie Travis, Fiesta San Antonio Commission President. “We want to inform all of you that we are listening to your concerns and wishes. Throughout all of our discussions and decisions, our primary goal is to have a safe Fiesta that poses no risks to our attendees and volunteers. We have concluded that the tradition of Fiesta must continue, but on different dates. The unknown health risks for celebrating Fiesta in April require a postponement until fall.”

Travis said the fall timeframe was selected to provide enough time for the COVID-19 epidemic to hopefully subside, and November 5-15 has the best availability for in-demand venues for favorite Fiesta events, as well as fewer conflicts with other events.

“The City of San Antonio is committed to help secure venues for all Fiesta San Antonio events within or very near that time period, and we will direct our efforts to making San Antonio’s first – and hopefully only -- Fall Fiesta, not only a great success for South Texas’s greatest charitable endeavor, but a testament to who we are as a community,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg. “Fiesta IS San Antonio. It has been our tradition for almost 130 years, and we are counting on a collective effort by those venues of and suppliers to Fiesta events to work with the Fiesta nonprofits to move their events to the fall in a cost-effective way.”

Fiesta San Antonio brings an economic impact of more than $340-million dollars to the San Antonio economy, and it supports almost 35-hundred full-time-equivalent jobs. Each Official Fiesta Event is organized by a different 501(c) nonprofit, and many depend on Fiesta revenue to enable them to serve the community year-round.

Added Travis, “The entire Fiesta organization is very grateful to the City of San Antonio, the thousands of city employees that help make Fiesta happen, and especially Mayor Nirenberg and Metro Health for helping us keep up with developments related to COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus day by day, hour by hour.”
