Megan Moroney has the best idea for the ultimate revenge on an ex.
Moroney, 28, caught up with TODAY backstage before she delivered her debut plaza performance this month. In a clip shared on Wednesday (July 15), the Georgia-born superstar spoke about her Cloud 9 era and tour, the inspiration behind her signature album colors, her go-to routines on the road, her go-to snacks, why Dolly Parton is a major fashion inspiration, and more.
During their conversation, the TODAY interviewer asked the Emo Cowgirl, “what is the best form of revenge you can get on an ex?”
“Best form of revenge, I would say probably having an arena full of people scream, ‘God, I hate how gross you are.’ Every single night. Louder than I could ever imagine,” Moroney said. The lyric appears in “Who Hurt You?,” a track on her third studio record that arrived earlier this year. She sings:
“You said you needed less flashy, more fun/ Oh, of course she’s twenty-one/ On your arm through the bar/ God, I hate how gross you are/ And how did I not see it?/ Your ego, it needs feeding/ Endlessly, relentlessly/ At the cost of me/ And I'll move on, and I'll find better/ But you'll stay the same forever/ And ever, happy never
“I guess now I know/ I’d rather be alone/ Than in the mess you made, it was all so fake/ How does it not get old?/ And, no, I wouldn't take you back/ But what makes it all a little sad/ Is knowing I wasn't the first/ And I know I won't be the last/ Heart you break in half/ To throw right in the trash/ Who hurt you so bad, bad, bad?”
TODAY went on to ask Moroney, “has an ex ever tried to get back with you after hearing one of your songs?”
“Not necessarily after hearing the song, but certainly, you know, months later — I honesty think my exes like when I write songs about them. I think it makes them feel special, unfortunately,” Moroney replied. Fittingly, Cloud 9 also includes “6 Months Later,” an anthem about a “heartbreaker” crawling back long after the split. It’s one of many scream-sing moments Moroney shares with her arena crowds on her ongoing “Cloud 9 Tour.” See the remaining dates below.
“I am so excited for my fans and I to dive into this new world of Cloud 9 together,” Moroney said in a statement when she announced her latest album. “Similar to the first two albums [2023’s Lucky and 2024’s Am I Okay?], it’s all written about honest, personal experiences, but these songs were written by the strongest, most confident version of myself I’ve ever been. My feet feel firmly planted in my artistry and it was fun to play around sonically, while still sticking to my roots of what my fans and I love. Cloud 9 is a state of mind, and I have no doubt this will be the best chapter yet.”
