Target Announces Large Bonuses For Employees After 'Year Unlike Any Other'

Target plans to express its gratitude to hourly employees' efforts amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The retail corporation announced it will be giving all hourly workers a $500 bonus in a press release shared on its official website Monday (January 25.)

Additionally, Target also plans to give store directors, executive team leaders and salaried distribution center leaders bonuses ranging from $1,000-$2,000, which will all be part of a $200 million investment among its total 12,000 employees.

"We're so proud of our team. They're the heart and soul of Target, showing up for one another and our guests-and making Target a safe and easy place to shop and work. And never has their dedication, resiliency, care and compassion been more appreciated than during the pandemic," Target said in a release.

According to the press release, this will be the fifth time Target has recognized team members with bonuses for their efforts during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The retailer also mentioned continuing to offer a $15 starting wage.

Target increased its minimum wage by $2 more than its previous starting total of $13 per hour last July. The federal minimum wage has been $7.25 since 2009, when it was set amid the Great Recession. Last week, President Joe Biden signed executive order to raise federal minimum wage.

Target said it plans to continue giving employees COVID-19 benefits into 2021, which includes "waiving its absenteeism policy for coronavirus-related illness, providing free access to health care through virtual doctor visits for all team members, a 30-day paid leave for vulnerable team members, free backup care to all U.S.-based team members, mental health support through free counseling sessions, and more."
